LARES TREKKING

This trek is for those who want to get out off the beaten track but still want to see Machupicchu. Lares takes you to a place so hidden that very few people have gone there. The Lares trail is known for its crystal-clear lakes and stunning mountain chains, high Andean Glaciers, its network of valleys and its indigenous Incan people who live amongst these mountains.

You will really get an in-site into the authentic communities and see thatched stone houses surrounded by herds of llamas and alpacas, and even guinea pigs running loose inside the houses.

In the town of Lares itself you can enjoy the thermal springs, a unique place to learn about traditions and a new way of life.

It begins from a small village in the Sacred Valley and ascends over two major passes (over 4,000 meters / 13,234 feet).

MACHU PICCHU TOURS

Machu picchu tOURS

Machu picchu was constructed around 1460AD then was abandoned less than 100 years later. It is likely that most of its inhabitants were wiped out by smallpox before the Spanish conquistadores arrived. Hiram Bingham the credited discoverer of the site, along with several others, originally hypothesized that the citadel was the traditional birthplace of the Inca people or the spiritual center of the "Virgins of the Suns”.

Machu picchu is a city located high in the Anden Mountains in Peru. It lies 43 miles northwest of Cuzco at the top of a ridge, hiding it from the Urabamba gorge below. The ridge is between the highlands and the massive Huayna Picchu, around which the Urubamba River takes a sharp bend. The surrounding area is covered in dense bush, some of it covering Pre-Colombian Machu picchu tours cultivation (which means "Old Peak") was most likely a royal estate and religious retreat. It was built between 1460 and 1470 AD by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, an inca ruler. The city has an altitude of 8,000 feet, and is high above the Urubamba River canyon cloud forest, so it is likely that it did not have any administrative, military or commercial use. After Pachacuti’s death, Machu picchu tours became the property of his allus, or kinship group, which was responsible for its maintenance, administration, and any new construction.

Machu picchu tours is comprised of approximately 200 buildings, most being residences, although there are temples, storage structures and other public buildings. It has polygonal masonry, characteristic of the late Inca period.

SALKANTAY TREKKING

Salkantay Trekking

The alternate Salkantay trek begins near the village of Mollepata at 9,515 feet (2900 meters). Usually, outfitters use pack horses to help carry food and equipment in order to lessen the burden on trekkers. During the first day, hikers enjoy magnificent vistas of "Apu Salkantay Trekking" and the lush Apurimac River Valley below. The trail passes through Andean communities like Cruzpata, Challacancha, and Soraypampa where the first campsite is usually located.  After the first day, trekkers will encounter very few locals on their journey to Machu Picchu.  The second day begins with a three hour ascent to the Apacheta Pass at 15,060 feet (4,590 meters).  From the pass, hikers can see three mountains, Salkantay Trekking, Humantay, and Huayanay. After a five hour downhill hikes, trekkers arrive at Rayan-Niyoc or Chaullay to camp for the night.

INCA TRAIL

1 Inca Trail (4daysincatrail.com)

In addition to being the trailhead for the Inca Trails , Km 88 is also the site of the ruins of Qoriwayrachina which are located near the Urubamba River.  Most hikers do not enter Qoriwayrachina to explore it. However, there are unique stone sculptures and alters present at Qoriwayrachina, making it well worth the effort to explore.

The next archaeological site encountered on the Inca trail are the ruins of Llactapata, a site that is thought to have been used primarily used for crop production. Llactapata is very well preserved and is located at 9,318 feet (2,840 m) above sea level. Its name means "High Town" in Quechua.

The Llactapata Ruins on the Classic Inca Trails should not be confused with the ruins of the same name located west of Machu Picchu that are observable on the alternate Inca Trail trek. Recent studies of the Llactapata Ruins located on the trail indicate that the settlement was positioned, designed and functioned as a sacred center similar to the Inca Trails, while the Llactapata Ruins on the Classic Inca Trail were more agricultural.  Sadly, few trekkers leave the Classic Inca Trail to visit the ruins that are located far below the trail. Peru cusco

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

1) Our classic 4-day Inca trails runs from March through to January. Please note that the Inca trail is closed for the month of February. Due to recent regulations the Inca Trail is only limited to 500 trekkers a day, including tour guides, porters and cooks. For this reason we highly recommend you book the Inca trail at least 3 - 6 months in advance, especially during the peak season (May to September). The trek permits are issued on a first-come-first served basis until the permits have all been sold out. Fortunately for those who have missed out on the Inca trail option, we do have a number of alternative routes to offer that can be booked a month or so in advance.

2) Due to high tourism unfortunately now if you are arriving to Machu Picchu from the 4 Day Inca Trail or by train the same day then it is becoming increasingly difficult (in fact almost impossible in the peak months) to climb Huayna Picchu (the mountain overlooking all of Machu Picchu for the best view) the same day. You will need to spend the night in AguasCalientes (the town of Machu Picchu) and return early the following day.
